Ultrasound, also known as ultrasonography or USG, is a diagnostic imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of structures inside the body. Unlike X-rays and CT scans, ultrasound does not use ionizing radiation. For this reason, it is widely used for evaluating pregnancy, abdominal organs, thyroid conditions, urinary tract problems, soft tissue abnormalities, and many other medical concerns.
During an ultrasound examination, a small handheld device called a transducer is moved over the skin. The transducer emits sound waves that travel into the body and bounce back from internal organs and tissues. A computer processes these returning echoes and converts them into real-time images that can be viewed immediately by the radiologist.
